CONTEMPORARY LONDON MEWS KITCHEN
A contemporary kitchen in a traditional mews home
PROJECT: London mews kitchen | LOCATION: London | YEAR: 2022
We were approached by our clients, who were living in New York at the time, but planning to return permanently to their London townhouse. The existing house had a small dark kitchen and utility at the rear of the property and very little natural light. Their architects, @MarkFairhurst, opened up the space by creating a mezzanine floor above the kitchen area and allowing more natural light in through the front of the house.
Our brief was to design a family kitchen with space for their children to eat at the peninsula or for hosting drinks with friends. They wanted a clean and fresh look that was still warm and inviting, for which our Contemporary range was ideal. There are plenty of wall units which run around the whole room and keep the lines simple and uniform. The oak door fronts are book matched and add to the feeling of warmth, contrastring well with the Little Greene Shirting doors on the remainder of the kitchen cabinets.
The worktop is Silestone Calacatta Gold which has touches of golden brown that picks up the oak details. The worktops have a shark’s nose profile which makes it look slimmer and enables easy access to the handleless doors and drawers. The appliances are all Miele with a Hotspot boiling tap.
The lighting was very important to get right. Not only did we light under the wall cabinets, but we also lit above them to avoid a dark void at the top. This was combined with some clever ceiling lighting which washes down the fronts of the cabinets.
All in all, this is a beautifully elegant, contemporary kitchen, with clean, crisp lines, but also featuring touches of warmth, all beautifully set off by the finishing touches carefully added by our client.
